Understanding VPN's

What Is a VPN? Beginner’s Guide

Short for Virtual Private Network, a VPN creates a secure connection between you and the internet. It provides you with an extra layer of privacy and anonymity, so you can:

  • Hide your internet activity and location to avoid being tracked (especially on public WiFi networks)
  • Freely browse the internet without constraints
  • Browse safely and anonymously with no speed throttling

What Does a VPN Hide?

Using a VPN hides your real IP address and encrypts your internet connection. Here are a few examples of what that looks like in real life:

  • Your browsing history is private — A VPN hides your browsing and search history from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The only thing the ISP can see is your encrypted traffic traveling to the VPN server.
  • You can change your online location — Your IP address gives away your physical location. With a VPN, you can connect to a server in a different country.
  • Your internet activities are anonymous — A no-logs VPN ensures that no one knows what you’re doing on the web.

Benefits of Using a VPN

Now that you know what a VPN does and how it works, let’s take a look at what you can do with a VPN:

1. Secure Your Online Privacy

If you’ve sent your bank details to anyone online or use public WiFi networks, you’re at risk of exposing your personal information to hackers (especially if you are using a public WiFi hotspot!).

A quality VPN will use the most advanced encryption to secure your data. It’ll also ensure that any websites receiving your private data can’t trace your device, which keeps you as anonymous as possible.

2. Improve Your Internet Connection and Speeds

At times, your ISP may deliberately slow down your Internet connection. It could be because it detects that you’ve gone over a certain data limit. Some ISPs even use this strategy to try to get you to upgrade your connection. The practice is known as “throttling.”

With a VPN, your activity remains private, and not even your ISP can see it. T.at means it can’t throttle your bandwidth, so you may actually see an increase in speeds

What Options are available for VPN's

Free VPN's

Free VPN's

There a lots of Free VPN options to choose from, and can be accessed easily by logging into the Google PlayStore and doing a simple search for "Free VPN"

Keep in mind a "Free" VPN may not always be user friendly, or cause issues such as:

increased lag in your internet signal strength

and may not always provide the best results

Repeated need to re-connect

Keep in mind as with most things from the Google PlayStore - you get what you paid for.

Paid VPN's

There are also lots of high quality, easy to use and manage Paid VPN's also available through the Google PlayStore.  The benefits of using a Paid VPN are typically:

Higher Quality Interface

Ease of Use

Effective security

and Reliability.

How to install a VPN (Free or Paid)

Step 1

On your box, go into the Apps section from the Homescreen, and find the PlayStore.  Click and log in using a valid Google Username and Password

Step 2

Search for "VPN" and you will be shown a variety of Free and Paid VPN's to choose from, find the VPN you want to try.... and click Install

Step 3

Once the VPN app is installed, you will have the option to "Open" The app you just downloaded... click OPEN

Step 4

You may need to set up an account if it is a PAID VPN,  follow the steps in the app to set up your VPN - This may require selecting a Region you want to use... Select a Region, and click Connect

Step 5

Once the VPN has connected, you can exit the VPN and return to your streaming app and see if this has resolved your issues.   If NOT, then repeat these steps to find a VPN or Region that works for you.

Do I need a VPN for Streaming?

In Canada, online Streaming is legal, so typically hiding your IP Address is not needed, however there are circumstances where specific events (such as worldwide Sporting events where the large Telecom and ISP companies may use a method to reduce access to streams, called Geo-Blocking.  This is where they mandate that specific ISP providers block access to certain streams or streaming services.

In this type of situation a VPN allows you to bypass this Geo-targetted (or region specific) limitation, and continue to access the content you are trying to enjoy.

EDMI does not in anyway provide access to or provide VPN services, but suggests if you want to become more familiar with this type of application,  there are plenty of resources availabkle through both Google and Youtube.
